Four Tips For Creating Celebrity Looks For Less

By Kristen Peuvion on July 28, 2014

Celebrities always look absolutely amazing in everything they wear, which explains why they are often our style icons. But dressing like a celeb isn’t always realistic. After all, they can afford to drop thousands of dollars on just one outfit. It can be a little daunting trying to look as chic as the stars knowing that one item their wearing probably costs more than your entire wardrobe.

So what’s a fashion lover to do with a shoestring budget that’s only a fraction of what the stars have?

Lucky for you, frugal fashionistas, it may not be as hard as you think. Many magazines, blogs and websites have sections dedicated to recreating Hollywood star’s most memorable looks for less.

After browsing through these different sights and magazine sections, I’ve begun to realize that recreating celeb looks for less doesn’t have to be as difficult as you’re making it out to be. With a little bit of searching and knowing the right places to shop, you’ll be able to copy your favorite celebrity looks while still having some extra cash in your wallet.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when trying to copy your favorite looks.

Acceptance is key.

It is important to accept early on that more likely than not, you will not look identical to whatever outfit you’re trying to recreate. That’s the whole point, you are recreating a look, not copying it piece by piece. While it is true that you’ll be able to find pieces that look almost exactly the same as what you’re mimicking, sometimes the pieces that stars are wearing are one of a kind and simply can’t be duplicated.

Once you accept that you won’t look like a replica of the outfit you love, you’ll be able to focus on finding similar, but not identical pieces that will help you make the outfit your own. That’s what is so great about using the stars as your fashion muse–you can still stay true to your own style, while also getting inspiration from whatever they’re wearing.

Do your research.

Doing your research before you actually go out and buy something is important whenever you go shopping, but especially so when you have specific pieces that you are looking for. Nothing is more frustrating than going from store to store looking for one specific piece and finding it nowhere. It can be exhausting and make you want to give up.

This is why research is so important. Before you head out to the mall, look up online the specific thing you are looking for whether it be a shirt, pants, blazer, hat, necklace, etc. Check out the websites of stores you plan on going to to see if they have something similar to what you’re looking for.

Also important to keep in mind while you’re doing your research is to check the prices. You don’t want to pay more for the same shirt you could get somewhere else for much cheaper.

Another thing to do when you’re doing your research is to check out blogs dedicated to celeb looks for less. The Budget Babe is a great one to look at. These blogs may already have the outfit you’re looking to recreate which means less work for you!

Even if you don’t love the suggestions they give, it’s a good place to start to give you an idea of what to be looking for.

Be wary about shopping online.

Often times when you’re looking to recreate an outfit, some of the pieces are pretty unique which may lead you to websites you’ve never shopped at before because they just happen to have something similar to what you’re looking for.

Shopping online introduces a whole bunch of potential problems that you should be careful of. If it looks like a sketchy website, it might be a good idea to try to find what you’re looking for someplace else.

Likewise, if you’ve never shopped at a place before, be sure to check out their return and exchange policy so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Finally, you probably won’t know how the clothes are going to fit you, so be careful when choosing a size.

Online shopping isn’t all bad though. The great thing about finding stuff online is that you can compare prices on just about anything. Finding what you want online allows you to ensure that you are getting your clothes for the best possible price without having to go from store to store.

Have a budget in mind and stick to it.

Last but not least, make sure you have a set budget before you go out looking for an outfit that your favorite celebrity just wore. As you know, celebrities often drop lots of money on their clothes, but you probably cannot afford to do so. Knowing how much you want to spend on a specific piece before you go shopping will ensure that you don’t overspend and end up regretting it later.
